Clarification on FRS Contribution Rates PDF  | Print |

As you are aware, the July 15, 2011 paycheck is the first paycheck reflecting the mandatory employee 3% contribution. With this paycheck, many employees have also noticed that the County’s employer contribution amounts have also changed and it may “seem” that the overall contribution going the FRS has decreased. However, you need not worry because the total going to your account at FRS is not changing (see further explanation below). New Poll Supports Fire Fighters

During a recent poll, more than 50% of the Florida voters said they did not support pendinglegislation that stripped fire fighters of their right to have their voluntary union dues deducted from their paychecks.

In a poll covering all 67 Florida Counties, 53% of voters agreed that the legislation was not necessary.  23% of those polled felt that it was, and 24% were undecided.

In Florida, membership in a union is voluntary.  If a person is unhappy, all they have to do is get out of the organization.

Florida's Fire Fighters have responded to the attacks by the Chamber by releasing its own commercial in the Tallahassee area.

In March, The Florida Chamber of Commerce released a television ad campaign attacking firefighters.  The Chamber, inviting themselves into a situation that does not concern them, utilized actors and not real fire fighters when they created an ad implying that fire fighters needed protection from their own unions, which they joined voluntarily.

Senate pension plan passes despite resistance PDF  | Print |

TALLAHASSEE (News Service of Florida) — Despite unease among even some supporters of the measure, the Senate Budget Committee approved a sweeping pension reform bill that would ask current employees to pay more and lock future employees out of the defined-benefit plan.

The measure passed after Budget Chairman J.D. Alexander, R-Lake Wales, urged committee members to “at least trust me today” and pledged to at least consider several changes to the measure. But talking to reporters after the meeting, Alexander stressed that changes would have to be considered in the broader context of the Legislature’s efforts to close a $3.75 billion budget shortfall.

  Dear Brothers and Sisters;
Attached is a new pension bill. After months of hearings and amendments, the Budget committee has decided they didn't like where the bill ended up so they have written their own 177 page version. We are analyzing the changes now.
Fraternally,

Gary Rainey, President
